Australia’s solar energy capacity has increased following the installation of up to 260 solar panels at Lobethal’s sewer pump station. These over 260 ground-mounted solar photovoltaic panels will be contributing up to 160 megawatt-hours annually. Such a capacity is enough to provide clean green energy to not less than 25 average households in South Australia (SA) for an entire year.

According to Nicola Murphy, a Senior Manager Zero Cost Energy Future in charge of water in SA, the move has its benefits. It will mean a reduction of the operating costs while remaining sustainable. At the same time, the prices which remain relatively low will little or no fluctuation which is suitable for the customers.  Equally important, it also achieves the goal of reducing emissions. Interestingly, the reduction will be as high as about 68 tons each year which is commendable. She gives a figure of $86 million for the money the sewer pump station used in the last financial year. As much as it is a considerable amount, it is understandable since the station is quite large. However, it would be great if the value was to go down as long as the quality and performance remain uncompromised.

The SA Waters already plans to thrive towards a time when it will be an initiative that uses zero cost on energy. The most appropriate option, if not the only one, is renewable energy, and that’s what SA decided to center the target around. That has led to the installation of about 500,000 solar panels. The locations to benefit from the installations are up to 33 in both metropolitan and regional South Australia. Nicole said that the installation has already reached the 300,000 solar panels mark already.  She added that they are not just in pump stations but also treatment plants, pipelines, and depots. As for the rest, approximately 200 000 solar panels. They will be constructed by the end of a few months as per the plan.

Therefore, it goes without saying that as ambitious as the goal may be, it doesn’t seem to be unachievable in the long run. She acknowledges that it is a people’s initiative designed with them at heart. As far as she is concerned, it is a sign that South Australia is setting a pace, and one must say that it is quite remarkable. She also said that they have the knowledge and skills necessary for the integration of energy storage and renewable energy in all the critical areas. Targeted areas would be their pump station, plants, and various landholdings already in existence.
